Do you want to treat yourself to a few hours of really good spooky atmosphere? We have eight good tips for you, all of which are included in PS Plus Premium. Eerie, grotesque, action – we have put together a dark and colorful list for you that you can enjoy by candlelight. Some games are available as an extra and one title is also available in the PS Plus Collection.

You don’t have a PS Plus Premium subscription? In case you still want to be inspired by our selection, we will list alternatives in addition to the platforms that the service covers.

Last updated on October 31: We’ve updated the list and swapped out The Medium and BioShock, as both titles are no longer available on PS Plus. Instead, you’ll get new fodder in the form of Alien: Isolation and Dead Island: Definitive Edition.

Alien: Isolation

In the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the film heroine Ellen Ripley, you find yourself on the Sevastopol space station. Of course, this is being plagued by a xenomorph. So you have to run away from the black alien without firearms and also defend yourself against the androids on the station using stealth.

Alien: Isolation is no less scary, even nine years after its first release. The stealth scenes in particular really get your pulse racing. Thanks to your microphone, you can pick up the sounds of the Xenomorph and plan every step. If you make a mistake, you die immediately and have to play the scene again.

Dead Island Definitive Edition

Maybe not the scariest game on this list, but perhaps the perfect counterpoint if you want a bit more action. In the Definitive Edition you not only get the first game but also the standalone Dead Island Riptide and the mini-game Dead Island Retro Revenge.

What’s the matter: You find yourself on the tropical island of Banoi. It’s actually a real holiday paradise, but unfortunately the zombies are on the loose. This means that you grab the nearest paddle (or whatever else is lying around) and try to survive somehow.

You can also experience the whole carnage in co-op if you want to be even less scared.

Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares is a small horror snack for in-between times, but still a real visual highlight. You control the (very) small girl Six, who hides under a hood, through levels that, thanks to the camera perspective and their art style, look a bit like a grotesque dollhouse.

In the process, a lot of childishly cute motifs are bizarrely distorted. This is exactly what makes the title so appealing, as it doesn’t have a great deal of depth to it. You complete a few puzzles and jumping sections and have to escape from a few nasty characters. You can’t defend yourself in part one. Since the story remains deliberately cryptic, you should feel free to interpret it yourself or just enjoy the beautifully spooky style.

Resident Evil 7

The Resident Evil series is of course the exact opposite of an insider tip in the horror genre. But just in time for Halloween, we still want to remind you that the scariest part of the series, Resident Evil 7, is in the PS Plus Collection. This means that you can even go to Baker’s house for free with Essential. Only the PS4 version is included, but even that should be enough to send a shiver or two down your spine.

You slip into the role of protagonist Ethan for the first timewho, while searching for his missing wife Mia, ends up on a rather spooky, dilapidated property in a swampy forest area. Things quickly get really ugly and bloody when he meets the local family. In terms of gameplay, Resi 7 relies on the usual combination of survival horror and puzzles, but you control Ethan in the first-person perspective.

Until Dawn

  • Platform subscription: PS4

If you’ve played other titles from developer Supermassive, or even if you just want to play one, we recommend Until Dawn. This is the studio’s first, and in our opinion best, interactive horror film. As with The Quarry and the Dark Pictures Anthology, you explore the settings and decide the fate of the main characters through dialogue options, the directions you take, and quick-time events.

All characters can survive the weekend in a snowy mountain chalet or pass away beforehand. The mostly rather unsympathetic teens actually come together to commemorate a deceased brother and sister, but the trip turns into a real horror trip

Monsters, an old mine, a dark forest, an abandoned sanatorium – Until Dawn used a lot of clichés, but staged them extremely effectively and built up more tension and horror than the newer Supermassive games. If you’ve already played the title, it might be worth a new playthrough because there are so many alternative paths (and nasty death scenes).

Observer: System Redux

  • Subscription model: Extra, Premium

Want some horror in a cyberpunk setting? Observer: System Redux takes you into an oppressive future world, full of highly developed but run-down technology. The game mixes horror elements with detective work. You slip into the role of neural detective Daniel Lazarski, who can, among other things, hack into the – usually distorted and broken – memories of the dead.

With the ambivalent main character you explore dimly lit corridors and neglected apartments in a sealed apartment complex for the lower classes. Failed existences, a headless corpse as a starting point: Observer builds up a constant threat, but also brings with it a certain melancholy. System Redux is the optimized current gen version of the game, which also comes with small additional side quests.

Have you been wondering where the action is in this list? Then Zombie Army 4 might be just the right title for you. This game isn’t scary, but the undead shooter is still a great fit for Halloween.

Zombie Army 4 scores especially with its gory atmosphere and gameplaybecause it simply offers entertaining and uncomplicated shooting fun. You can enjoy it particularly well in co-op. The title is therefore also recommended for anyone who wants to get in the mood for the spooky season with friends. You shouldn’t expect too much from the story, apart from a few quick sayings. But in our opinion, that’s enough for this type of game.

Transference

  • Platform subscription: PS4, PSVR
  • Alternative platforms: PC, PC VR, Xbox One (without VR)

Elijah Wood is probably best known to many as Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. But the actor is also a big fan of horror and video games, which is why he produced Transference with his own studio and Ubisoft a few years ago. The special thing about the game is that it is set in a digital world and film footage with real actors is repeatedly inserted.

So we find ourselves within a digitally reconstructed buildingwhich is created by a prototype headset from the fictional Harmony Labs. In this world, we experience the story of the headset inventor’s family and see the events from the perspective of the different family members. To do this, we collect clues and uncover the secrets that have caused them to be apparently trapped in this world.

The game is particularly suitable for a short sci-fi horror trip in one evening due to the short playing time of a maximum of two hours without guides. The game mainly uses jump scares, caused by a barking dog and a shadowy creature that suddenly appears. There are no chases or anything similar. The horror elements are used discreetly and the focus is more on the atmosphere and discovering the constantly changing house.
